At Spout Education, we offer different approaches depending on your child’s needs and the tutor you choose to work with.
1. Orton-Gillingham and EMS Tutoring
Explicit, structured, and multisensory literacy instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach or the French EMS approach (Enseignement Multisensoriel Simultané). These methods are designed for students with dyslexia and significant difficulties in reading, writing, and spelling.
This service is a good fit if your child:
has been diagnosed with dyslexia or a reading or writing difficulty
is struggling in school despite working hard
needs support in English or French literacy
2. Structured Literacy and Play-Based Instruction
Engaging, game-based structured literacy support that builds foundational skills through short, interactive practice.
This service is a good fit if your child:
benefits from a warm, playful approach that also supports oral language
needs help with decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension
is enrolled in a French or English school program
is in the early stages of literacy and needs extra practice to make skills stick
3. P -12 Mathematics
Targeted math support that starts with how your child actually thinks about number, then teaches the next small step.
Lessons build number sense, place value, calculation, and confidence. Instruction is informed by research on how children develop number knowledge. We use explicit, scaffolded teaching. Hands-on materials come first when needed. Mental strategies and written methods follow once the idea is secure.
This is a good fit if your child:
is falling behind in math
struggles with number concepts, facts, regrouping, or dyscalculia
has learning differences such as ADHD and needs a slower, clearer path
is on track but needs preventative support or more challenge
3. Educational Technology Support
A tool only helps if the student can use it in real work. We help families choose the right supports, teach the student how to use them, and plan how those tools show up in reading, writing, math, and other subjects.
This can include speech-to-text, text-to-speech, word prediction, and other built-in or school-approved supports. We do not sell software. We help you use what the student already has, or what the school can provide, with a clear plan.
This service is a good fit if your child:
has a recommendation for speech-to-text or other assistive technology and is not using it yet
avoids writing because typing or handwriting is slow or exhausting
has the tool at school but not at home, or the reverse
needs the same support in more than one subject, not only language arts
How it works
Consultation. Review what the school or assessment already recommends. Identify which tools to try and what to ask for at team meetings (adaptations or IPP language).
One-on-one teaching. Short, explicit lessons so the student can start, edit, and save work independently.
Across subjects. Practice the same tool in writing, reading, math explanations, and homework, so it becomes a habit rather than a special event.
Available in English and French, in person in Halifax or virtually. This can be booked as part of tutoring or as a short consulting block.
4. Educational Consulting
Focused guidance to help families understand assessments and advocate for their child.
A 60-minute session can include:
review of psychoeducational assessments, IPPs or IEPs, and accommodations
suggestions for IPP learning outcomes and adaptations
preparation for school team meetings
guidance on public, independent, or French school options
This can be booked on its own or added to ongoing tutoring. When families want more collaboration with the school, a Spout educator can attend a team meeting (booked separately) and help keep home and school working from the same plan.

trying to understand a recent assessment
preparing for a school team meeting
considering different school options
looking for clear recommendations matched to your child’s learning profile
